Accessibility
Last updated 28 September 2026
This statement covers the Smart Tax Digital website and app. It explains how accessible they are, what we know still needs work, and how to tell us about a problem.
1. Our commitment
We want everyone to be able to keep their records and file with HMRC using Smart Tax Digital, including people who use a keyboard instead of a mouse, a screen reader, voice control, magnification, or high-contrast and dark display settings. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA.
2. What you should be able to do
- use every page with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus indicator, and skip straight to the main content
- zoom text up to 400% without content being cut off or needing to scroll sideways
- use the service in light or dark mode, with text that meets WCAG contrast requirements in both
- hear form errors, saved confirmations and the result of each HMRC submission announced by a screen reader
- read the figures behind charts as a table
- get a plain-English explanation of tax terms from the “?” buttons, which work with the keyboard and close with Escape
- use the service with reduced motion if you’ve turned that on in your device settings
3. Compliance status
Smart Tax Digital is partially compliant with WCAG 2.2 level AA, because of the known limitations listed below.
4. Known limitations
- Invoice and quote PDFs are not yet tagged PDFs, so a screen reader may not read their structure (such as the table of line items) correctly. The same details are available on the Invoicing page itself, and in the email sent to your customer.
- Messages from HMRC — such as tax calculation notes and HMRC Assist prompts — are shown exactly as HMRC provides them, so we can’t guarantee their wording is in plain English.
We plan to fix the PDF issue as part of our invoice template work.
5. Reporting a problem
If you find something hard to use, or you need information in a different format, email support@smarttaxdigital.com. Tell us the page and what went wrong, and we’ll reply within 5 working days.
If you’re a customer and something is stopping you from meeting an HMRC deadline, say so in your email and we’ll prioritise it.
6. How we tested
This statement was prepared on 28 September 2026. We tested using:
- automated WCAG 2.2 A and AA checks (axe-core) in Google Chrome, on every public page and every page you reach after signing in, in light and dark mode, at desktop and phone widths
- an automated keyboard check that every focusable element shows a visible focus indicator
- an automated check that pages reflow at 320 pixels wide (equivalent to 400% zoom) without sideways scrolling
- a manual review of page titles, form labels, error announcements, skip links, charts and tooltips
We re-test whenever we make significant changes, and review this statement at least once a year.
